Becoming an Official

Swim meets are essenential to the sport of swimming... they allow athletes to test their skills, reach their goals, and most importantly, have fun!

Swim Officials:  Apply the technical and administrative rules of swimming to ensure fair competition.  Usually swim officials are volunteer parents or swimmers who have taken the courses through Swimming Canada and Swim Alberta.  Often they have the best seat in the house.

Instructions to help you navigate the steps to CREATE your Officials account may be found here: Swim Canada Instructions - New Registrants

Once your Swimming Canada account has been created and activated, you can access the LMS (Learning Management System) to view training.  Every new Official starts by taking the Introduction to Swimming Officiating and Safety Marshal courses.  Make sure to click through all of the slides to finish the entire e-module.  This ensures the system registers the course as completed.

1. Log in to your REMS account at: SportLomo
2. Click on the grey "LMS" button.
3. On the drop-down menu select "official"
4. It will bring you to the "Welcome" of the LMS.  There's a row of buttons on the top.  Click on the STATUS button.

At any point, if you have questions, ask!

Next steps as a new Official

Sign up for a meet to be an official!

1. You're interested.
2. Which session(s) you are available.
3. Your certification level (which courses you've taken, do you want to shadow, or are you fully qualified.)

Officials Dress Code:
Black bottoms (pants/shorts/skirt)
Black shoes
White Tshirt or Polo shirt (Timekeepers and Chief Timer)
Red Polo shirt (all other officials)

TRACKING YOUR COMPLETED CLINICS AND EVALUATIONS
Your completed clinics and successful deck evaluations are recorded in your REMS profile under the Credentials tab. You should also be able to see your completed clinics in the Learning Management System (LMS) under the “Status” tab.

If you notice a discrepancy between what’s been recorded and what you know you’ve completed, please contact the Riptides Chief Officials Administrator (COA) with this issue to get it fixed.

It is STRONGLY recommended to:
1. Keep the email receipt sent to you from Swimming Canada after you complete a clinic.
2. Take a photo of your name on the sign-in sheet if you are officiating at a swim meet.
3. Take a photo of the completed (signed) evaluation sheet if you get a successful evaluation so you have a personal record.

Many times we forget the date/time/meet and know our officiating is done, but can't prove it.  Doing the above will help prevent you from having to re-do a course or a deck evaluation.
